“Beyond the Imagination” is the latest project from Iceland.
Glacial rivers in Iceland are beyond the imagination. These remarkable patterns seen from above blending into the bed of braided rivers become truly nature masterpieces and inspiration. Globally they are very rare. They occur only where a very specific combination of climate and geology allows rivers to form ever-changing and highly dynamic ‘braided’ channels across a wide gravelly riverbed. The amazing colors typically form on fairly steep slopes and carry a large number of coarse-grained sediments. When the river’s flow decreases, these sediments get deposited on the river bed leaving behind small temporary islands of sand that cause the river’s channel to split. Aside from a steep gradient and abundance of sediments, a variable water discharge rate is essential to their formation.

High above the earth, from the vantage point of an eagle in flight or a drifting hot-air balloon, you witness a sight so breathtaking that it almost seems unreal. Below, the land is etched with intricate, winding patterns, like strands of silken thread woven together in a colorful tapestry. These are the braided glacier rivers, a natural marvel, constantly shifting and evolving—a true testament to the power and beauty of nature.
But how did these rivers come to be? How did such a seemingly chaotic network of channels, islands, and streams form something so profoundly beautiful?
The Birthplace: Melting Glaciers
The journey of braided glacier rivers begins high in the frozen heart of the mountains, where towering glaciers slowly inch their way down steep valleys. These ancient ice masses have existed for centuries, sometimes millennia, storing vast amounts of snow and ice. As the climate shifts with the changing seasons or over long epochs, the glaciers begin to melt, releasing streams of crystal-clear water.
This glacial meltwater is cold, fast, and charged with energy. It carries with it bits of rock, sand, and silt that have been scraped from the bedrock by the glacier’s immense weight. As the ice melts, the water trickles down the mountains, forming small creeks that gain strength and volume as they flow further downhill. At this point, they are simple, singular rivers—but that is about to change.
The Braiding Process: A Dance of Sediment and Water
As the rivers carry more and more debris—tiny grains of sand, larger pebbles, even boulders—they enter the flatter terrain of the valleys below. Here, the water slows down, and its ability to hold onto all that sediment diminishes. The river begins to deposit the material it’s carried from the mountains, and as the sediment builds up, the river has no choice but to split.
Like fingers braiding a ribbon, the river divides into multiple streams, which twist and turn around the mounds of deposited sediment. These new channels intertwine and then rejoin, only to separate again in a complex network of channels that can be dozens or even hundreds of miles long. It’s a chaotic yet harmonious process—nature’s artistry at work. The continuous shifting of these streams creates the distinctive braided pattern visible from the sky.
Color and Life: The Glacial Palette
What makes these braided glacier rivers even more enchanting is the kaleidoscope of colors they often display. The water, fresh from the glaciers, is often a stunning milky blue or turquoise, tinted by rock flour—finely ground particles of rock created as the glaciers scrape against the bedrock. When the sunlight hits this water, it reflects off the suspended particles, giving the river its signature jewel-like hue.
In some cases, rivers may take on shades of gray, green, or even vibrant shades of red or yellow, depending on the minerals present in the surrounding rock. These rivers are not just water—they are a living canvas, shaped by the land they pass through.

After weaving through mountains and valleys, these rivers continue their journey, gathering more tributaries and spreading wider as they near their final destination—the ocean. At this point, the braided glacier rivers may seem to disappear, but their story is far from over. The sediment they carried now settles into the ocean, contributing to the creation of new landforms over time. The nutrients they provided sustain coastal ecosystems, feeding plankton, fish, and even the birds that soar high above the water, tracing the rivers’ journey from glacier to sea.
